How is Müller® Yogurt made?

Milk is taken locally from cows across the Shropshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire countryside and kept in storage tanks ready for use.
The milk is collected from the farm in special insulated milk tankers to keep it cool and fresh. When the milk arrives at our Dairy it is pasteurised (heated through to stop bad bacteria growing), this ensures the milk is safe, just like the milk you have at home.
The milk is then pumped into special tanks where ‘friendly’ bacteria (also known as yogurt cultures) are added. This friendly bacteria ferments the lactose (the natural sugar in milk) turning it into lactic acid. The lactic acid sours the milk causing it to thicken, and form its characteristic yogurty texture and mildly tangy tast.
When the yogurt is ready it is cooled down to a temperature where the bacteria are no longer able to grow. For some yogurts, the yogurt is then gently mixed with fruit compote to make fruit yogurts.
The yogurt is then poured into pots and packaged ready to be sold in the shops.
In our famous Fruit Corner yogurts we produce a separate fruit compote to let you enjoy it in your own individual way.

Where are Müller® Yogurts made?

Our yogurts are made in Market Drayton, in the rural county of Shropshire surrounded by lots of lovely cows and fields. This is an ideal location for Müller as it is within a 50 mile radius of 30% of the UK’s milk production therefore allowing us to source the majority of our milk locally.
A few of our products are also made in Saxony or Bavaria in Germany and shipped over for you to enjoy.

Can I freeze Müller® Yogurt?

Frozen dairy products for example ice cream tend to contain air, which softens the texture. As yogurt does not contain air, it is not really suitable for freezing as the lack of air makes frozen yogurt very hard and brittle therefore difficult to eat.
We do not recommend that you freeze your yogurt as this will lead to a poorer yogurt quality when it is defrosted. As the yogurt defrosts some of the natural water within the yogurt separates out into a watery layer, which doesn’t taste very nice.

Do Müller® products contain any of the artificial additives linked to hyperactivity?

No, as a responsible manufacturer we do not use any of the artificial additives linked to hypersensitivity referenced in the FSA's 2007 report in any of our products ie. Sunset yellow (E110), Carmoisine (E122), Tartrazine (E102), Ponceau 4R (E124), Sodium benzoate (E211), Quinoline yellow (E104), Allura red (E129).
In addition, our children's range - Müller Little Stars - is made from 100% natural ingredients.

If I am pregnant am I still able to eat Müller® products?

Yes, all our milk is pasteurised on site and is therefore considered safe for pregnant women and breastfeeding mums. In fact milk and milk products can be an important source of protein, vitamins and minerals including, calcium.

I want to keep my fat intake low, which Müller® products should I eat?

If you want to keep your fat intake low you could try products from our Müllerlight range. We also produce Müller Rice and Müller Vitality which are low in fat as well as the Healthy Balance range which is a low fat, probiotic, Müller Corner.
Our products are intended to be incorporated into a healthy, varied and balanced diet and we include nutritional labelling on our packs to help you make an informed choice about protein, fat and carbohydrate levels, as well as providing calorie information for those customers interested in counting their calorie intake.

What do you mean when you say 'contains a source of Phenylalanine'?

Phenylalanine is an amino acid found naturally within all high protein foods such as meat, cheese and milk and is one of the main building blocks of all proteins.
Where aspartame is used as an ingredient it will contain Phenylalanine. Whilst this ingredient presents no issues for the majority of our customers, sufferers of Phenylketonuria (PKU) (around 0.01\% of the population) need this information to avoid this ingredient.

What are Probiotics and Prebiotics?

Probiotics: Are beneficial bacteria that live in the digestive system. Certain probiotic cultures are added to foods like yogurts and yogurt drinks as they are beneficial in helping to maintain a healthy digestive system.
In a healthy individual the numbers of good (healthy) bacteria in the gut outweigh the bad (pathogenic) bacteria. Probiotic cultures help to promote the growth of 'good' bacteria, shifting the balance away from the bad.

Prebiotics: Are a form of insoluble fibre, that pass through the stomach and into the intestine intact, providing a selective food source for probiotic (good) bacteria already present.

What is the difference between probiotic and live yogurts?

Although they don't always highlight the fact on the label all yogurts bought from the chiller cabinet, whether fruit or plain, are 'live' or 'active' - meaning they contain live bacteria or active cultures. Providing they are stored correctly (in the fridge) and eaten by the best before date they will contain live bacteria. Probiotic yogurts contain a special strain of probiotic 'friendly' bacteria that have been clinically proven to reach the bowel and help restore the balance of good and bad bacteria.

What do the codes surrounded by a circle mean on the Müller® packs?

These codes are called identification marks and they appear on all of our products.
Where you see this mark you can be assured that the product has been produced in hygienic approved premises. The codes also give an indication of the factory where your product is made.

Can I recycle Müller® packaging?

As the nation’s favourite dairy brand we are committed to the protection and enhancement of the environment and as such we endeavour to ensure that you can recycle the packaging of our products.
• Pots
Yes in principle it is possible to recycle our pots. All of our pots are made of plastic. While there are many schemes available to recycle our bottles made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), unfortunately there are very few household schemes to recycle the rigid plastics that are used for our pots.
The plastic used in our yogurt pots is either Polystyrene (PS) or Polypropylene (PP).These are easily identified by the Mobius loop underneath that will have either a number or the shortened description of the material or both.
We use PS for all our Corner products, Little Stars range, Müllerlight and Vitality.
Müller Rice used PP because the product can be microwaved and all our transparent pots are PP also.
Our Amoré yogurt uses a pot which is a composite of PS and paperboard and the two parts plastic and paper can be separated for easy recycling.
• Bottles
The bottles used for our delicious Vitality drink are made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE is often part of many kerbside collection schemes and readily recycled.
• Lids
Most of our lids (excluding Müller Corner and Little Stars range) are made from aluminium; therefore these can be recycled within aluminium recycling schemes.
Aluminium cans and foil can be recycled in one of the cash for cans schemes throughout the UK, or they can be donated to help raise funds for different local charities and community groups.
You can also give your aluminium to a local authority recycling scheme: most collect aluminium cans, and an increasing number operate foil schemes.
It is important to ensure that the lids are washed prior to recycling to help ensure the quality of recycled material.

Our Corner and multi-pack lids are made from a laminate of paper and PET, which has been metallised. This means unfortunately these lids can not be recycled. Laminates are only used where other materials that are able to be recycled cannot.
• Sleeves
Our sleeves are made from paper or board, therefore these are also recyclable within any paper / board recycling scheme.
• Flow-wrap
The plastic film that surrounds some of our Multi-packs is actually made from PP, this material is used in many applications around the house from bread wraps to biscuit packets and is used as it is tough enough to hold the pots together even at less than 0.5mm thick. Being PP film again whilst it can be recycled there are limited number of recycling facilities for this type of plastic.

Which Müller® products are suitable for people with diabetes?

Diabetes UK doesn’t recommend a special diet for people with diabetes. They say “while the emphasis for people with diabetes used to be on severely restricting sugar, it is now recognised that the exclusion of sugar from the diet is both unnecessary and impracticable”.
“The diet for people with diabetes is a balanced healthy diet, the same kind that is recommended for the rest of the population – low in fat, sugar and salt with plenty of fruits and vegetables and meals including some starchy foods.”
In terms of total sugar and fat content of our product ranges, both the Müllerlight and Müller Vitality 0.1% drinks range are fat free and contain either no or relatively small amounts of added sugar, serving as healthier options for all.

How do I go about recycling packaging?

In some parts of the country local authorities have started to include local collection points and kerbside collection for many plastics packaging
The best thing to do is contact your local authority to understand what kerbside and collection point recycling schemes they have in place. To find out more about recycling and what recycling facilities are in place in your local area visit www.recycle-more.co.uk.
It is important to ensure that you wash the pots, bottles or lids thoroughly before recycling as many recyclers cannot use even slightly soiled plastic waste.

Gluten free products may be suitable for coeliacs, dependant on their individual circumstances. Products that contain no more than 0.02% (200 parts per million) gluten in accordance with recognised international standards (CODEX) are deemed to be gluten free.
